LL-37 (Cathelicidin) Testing
Only human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide; broad-spectrum antimicrobial and immunomodulator.
Mechanism of action
Only human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide; cleaved from hCAP18 precursor. Direct antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses, plus immunomodulatory effects on neutrophils, macrophages, and epithelial cells.
Sequence & structure
Highly cationic amphipathic α-helix; strongly aggregation-prone in solution. Storage at high concentration drives oligomerization that affects activity.

What we test on LL-37 (Cathelicidin)
RP-HPLC purity, intact-mass LC-MS, SEC-HPLC for aggregation, LAL endotoxin.
- ✓RP-HPLC purity
- ✓ESI-MS identity
- ✓Endotoxin (LAL, USP <85>)
- ✓SEC for LL-37 aggregation
Common impurities & failure modes
- Aggregates / oligomers
SEC-HPLC quantifies; can represent >30% of material in poorly-stored vials.
- Oxidation of internal residues
Met- and Trp-free, so primary oxidation pathway is via diffusion-mediated radical chemistry.
- Truncation
Standard SPPS failures.
- Endotoxin
An antimicrobial peptide with endotoxin contamination is self-defeating; LAL mandatory.
